Caring for waxed canvas and a leather base
Most of the care here is restraint. Brush the dry dirt off with a stiff brush and leave the marks; a waxed finish is meant to be lived with, and its history is why people choose it over nylon.
For a stain, cold water and a cloth, working with the weave. Never machine wash it, never use hot water or detergent, and never dry it on a radiator or in a dryer. All of those strip the wax or move it around inside the cloth, and a stripped patch soaks where the rest beads. Re-wax when water stops beading and starts darkening the cloth instead, usually after a year or two of regular travel.
The leather base wants the opposite treatment: wipe it after a trip, and give it a light conditioner once or twice a year, kept off the canvas.
