How weather-resistant waxed canvas is
Wax does not absorb water, so rain beads on this canvas and rolls off it instead of soaking through. What it is not is a sealed case. The flap covers the main opening but the seams are not taped and the closure is not gasketed, so this bag is water-repellent, not waterproof. In practice it handles the weather a walk, a commute, or a day of shooting in a city throws at it, and if the sky genuinely opens you should get under something, the same as you would with the camera in your hands. Caring for waxed canvas and leather trim
One rule matters more than the rest: never machine wash this bag, and never use detergent or hot water on it. All three strip the wax, and stripped wax is a canvas bag that no longer sheds rain. To clean it, brush the dry dirt off first, then sponge the mark with cold water and let it air dry away from radiators and direct sun. Most scuffs rub out under a thumb, because the wax moves instead of scratching. When the beading fades, warm the fabric, work a wax bar over it in thin layers, and leave it overnight to cure, and the water repellency comes back.
